Remembering 9/11: Changing Careers May Have Saved My Life

Then I took two elevators to get to my office on the 66th floor of the north tower ( I had to change elevators at what was called the sky lobby on the 44th floor). There was a bright red sculpture by Alexander Calder on the plaza, a  giant tapestry by Joan Miro in the lobby of one tower, and a sculpture by Louise Nevelson mounted on the wall of the other. On that fateful day 10 years ago two of my former colleagues, who had the same traffic patterns, died in one of those elevators. From my office on a clear day, I had a view north, all the way to the George Washington Bridge. For six years it was my world. I always had mixed emotions about the Twin Towers. In some ways they were grand.
