Two weeks ago, she finally bought a new gold chain and cross to replace one she bought in 2004 for about $175. Instead, more customers are opting for repair work or custom designing a new piece with old gold rather than buying new. With gold hovering around $1,800 an ounce in recent weeks — it was $1,500 at the beginning of July and less than $1,300 a year ago — local jewelers say their retail sales are down. Her new piece ran her about $900, and “it’s actually smaller, less gold and not as heavy,” Williams said. With gold four times more expensive than it was at the beginning of the decade, she doesn’t just buy a new piece when something catches her eye these days. The run-up in gold prices is changing the behavior of consumers, and local jewelers have had to adapt.
